Colcrys- generic Colcrys (Colchicine)

Generic Colcrys is the only brand of colchicine that has been approved by the FDA, and while it is most commonly used as an anti-inflammatory in the treatment of gout, it is also sometimes prescribed in the treatment of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), which is a genetic condition.

In the case of FMF, Colcrys can be taken by adults and children over the age of 4 years old. It should be noted that if your doctor does prescribe Colcrys for the treatment of your gout inflammation, then the chances are that you will have to go for regular check-ups to have your blood tested, especially if you are taking the medication for an extended period.

Colcrys DOSING

The actual dosage thatyou will be required to take will be entirely up to your doctor, with a number of different factors going into that decision. Colcrys tablets usually come in 0.6mg doses, and for the treatment of gout flares, the recommended dosage is 1.2mg (2 tablets) per day, although your doctor may change that depending on how you react to the treatment.

For adults taking generic Colcrys for the treatment of FMF, that dosage can go as high as 2.4mg per day, but again, the final decision will rest solely with your doctor. Be sure to follow his dosage instructions exactly as prescribed, as taking more than the prescribed daily amount can result in serious health issues and even overdose.

The only time that Colcrys will be prescribed to children will be for the treatment of FMF, and the recommended daily dosage will depend on the age of the child: Children 4-6: 0.3mg to 1.8mg daily

Children 6-9: 0.9mg to 1.8mg daily

12 years and older: 1.2mg t0 2.4mg daily

HOW TO USE Colcrys?

If you have been prescribed colchicine for the treatment of your gout, be sure to verify that it is Colcrys that you are taking, as that is currently the only FDA approved colchicine medication available.

You should take the medication exactly as instructed by your doctor, and you should never raise or lower the dosage level unless told to do so by your physician.

Colcrys should be taken with water, and can be taken before or after a meal. You may have to take a second dose one hour after the first if the pain is especially bad, but not if doing so would then exceed your daily dosage amount.

You should start taking the medication at the first sign of the onset of a gout attack, as this will give you the best chance of keeping the inflammation at bay.

There are a number of side effects with Colcrys, as there are with most anti-inflammatory, and you should immediately contact your doctor if you experience any symptoms that seem out of the ordinary.
